Schneider Electric has provided the electrical and digital infrastructure for Skysports VDX, described as the first commercial vertiport in the world, at Dubai International Airport, according to TradeArabia News Service. The report states that the facility reached technical completion in April 2026 and was certified for electric vertical take-off and landing operations in July 2026.

The vertiport is the first and flagship site in Dubai's planned air taxi network, and additional vertiports are in development at Dubai Marina, Downtown Dubai and Palm Jumeirah. The facility is designed to handle as many as 170,000 passengers annually.

The infrastructure is intended to support high-power charging that keeps Joby Aviation aircraft ready between flights, electrical systems built to aviation-grade safety standards, and real-time intelligence linking power, charging and building systems across the site. The architecture includes digital low-voltage switchboards, a building management system, EcoStruxure Power Operation at VDX integrated with the Dubai Marina Vertiport, ION9000 power quality monitoring, connected power meters, capacitor banks and Galaxy UPS protection for critical systems.

According to the report, the design targets three outcomes. Operational resilience is meant to keep the vertiport flight-ready through real-time visibility into critical power and building systems so potential issues can be addressed before they affect operations. Energy intelligence is intended to optimise consumption across the facility and allow aircraft charging to adapt dynamically to demand. Network scalability is designed to make the site a blueprint, with a standardised digital architecture that shares infrastructure status automatically with flight scheduling and charging systems and can be replicated at subsequent stations.

Once the site is fully operational, Schneider Electric's solutions are expected to deliver energy savings of up to 25% across the facility.

The project supports the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and its 20-Minute City policy, which envisions residents reaching most daily destinations within 20 minutes. Journeys that take 45 minutes by road are expected to take approximately 12 minutes by air, positioning Dubai among the first cities to incorporate electric air travel into everyday urban mobility.

Gareth Wilson, General Manager for Dubai at Skyports Infrastructure, said charging electric aircraft creates significant and rapidly changing power demands while the terminal and its critical systems must remain fully operational. He said the company selected Schneider Electric for power infrastructure that is resilient, responsive and intelligent, and that the scalable approach provides a baseline for rolling out additional vertiports across the wider Dubai network.

Amel Chadli, Gulf Cluster and Countries President at Schneider Electric, said the collaboration with Skyports Infrastructure marks a significant step toward redefining the future of urban mobility.
