Paris Air Show Background

Paris Air Show Resources

Electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft manufacturer Eve Air Mobility announced on Tuesday that it had signed a letter of intent for 50 jets with Widerøe Zero, an initiative by Norwegian carrier Widerøe focused on sustainability. Also on Tuesday, Eve announced that it signed a letter of intent for up to 30 jets with Nordic Aviation Capital, an aircraft leasing company. Both deals were announced at the 2023 Paris Air Show, increasing the order value of the aircraft.

Since its founding in 2020, Embraer's subsidiary Eve Air Mobility has made headway in the eVTOL market. Its aircraft will be suitable for one pilot and up to four passengers and is being built with politeness operations in mind when fully autonomous flight becomes permissible. The aircraft can fly up to 125 miles per hour (200 kph) and has a range of 60 miles (96 km).

Currently, almost 300 engineers are working on the Eve project, with the company planning on beginning the assembly of its first full-scale eVTOL prototype in the second half of 2023. This will be followed by full-scale testing of the aircraft by 2024 and certification by regulators by 2026.

Meets demand

Following its letter of intent, Nordic Aviation Capital will expect up to 30 eVTOL jets and will provide financing and leasing solutions for the aircraft to its customers around the globe. Andre Stein, co-CEO of Eve, spoke about the order with Nordic Aviation Capital.

"This partnership with Nordic Aviation Capital offers the world greater convenience and access to the latest and most advanced air travel solutions. By leveraging leading technology and providing exceptional customer experiences, fleet operations will enable the growth and development of the urban air mobility network. With the support of NAC, creating strategic partnerships will continue to allow Eve to improve the network and accessibility of urban air mobility."

Following Eve's extension of its partnership with Widerøe Zero for up to 50 eVTOLs, as well as the implementation of Eve's Urban Air Traffic Management (Urban ATM) software solution, Andre Stein, co-CEO of Eve said,

"This new partnership builds upon a previous MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed between Eve and Widerøe Zero in 2021 at the UN Climate Conference (COP26), which aimed to develop eVTOL operations in Scandinavia. This additional LOI reinforces our commitment to introducing sustainable, safe and affordable urban air travel to the region. Together, we will drive this transformation and pave the way for a more accessible transportation ecosystem for Scandinavian communities."

Growing demand

Eve's small but sustainable aircraft has become popular, with airlines looking to step towards green aircraft, including United Airlines, Global Crossing Airlines (Global X), Kenya Airways subsidiary Fahari Aviation, and Singaporean company Ascent. Eve has already had provisional sales and commitments for some 2,770 of its aircraft from 26 different customers. So far, the aircraft has generated billions of dollars in orders. Eve's eVTOL aircraft is 100% electric, making it a cost-effective, sustainable transportation alternative.

Furthermore, United Airlines and Eve announced the launch of the airline's eVTOL operations in San Francisco. In 2026, United passengers can book a flight aboard an all-electric Eve eVTOL aircraft in San Francisco. This flight will take from an eVTOL station within the city to San Francisco International Airport (SFO), improving passengers' travel experience and reducing travel time and emission output.
