Vertical Aerospace Hits Key Flight Milestones, Secures $100 Million Financing

Vertical Aerospace (EVTL) said it completed piloted transition flights with two full-scale prototypes in the first half of 2026, demonstrated its Valo aircraft publicly for five consecutive days at the Farnborough International Airshow, and lined up roughly $100 million in financing commitments to fund development through the third quarter of 2027.

The Bristol, UK-based electric aviation company detailed the progress in a business update released August 13, ahead of a conference call hosted by CEO Stuart Simpson, Chief Test Pilot Simon Davies, and Chief Commercial and Strategy Officer Michael Cervenka.

Simpson characterized 2026 as one of the most significant periods in the company's history. "We achieved major flight test milestones, demonstrated our aircraft's maturity through five consecutive days of flying at Farnborough, expanded the ecosystem around the aircraft and strengthened our financial position," he said.

Flight Test Progress

Vertical said it became only the second company globally to complete a piloted transition flight in a full-scale tiltrotor eVTOL when it accomplished the feat in April under oversight of the U.K. Civil Aviation Authority. A second full-scale prototype began piloted testing in June and completed its own transition flight this week, just over two months after entering the flight-test program, according to the company.

At the Farnborough International Airshow in July, Vertical conducted what it described as the event's first eVTOL flight demonstration. Davies said the aircraft performed a complete transition sequence—taking off vertically, accelerating into wing-borne flight, and then reversing the process for landing—in front of approximately 140,000 visitors.

Davies said the company repeated the display over five consecutive days in varying weather conditions, including headwinds, tailwinds, and crosswinds. The aircraft "behaved exactly as designed," he added.

The flight campaign also extended beyond Vertical's usual test environment at Cotswold Airport. Following an expansion of its CAA permit to fly, the company operated the aircraft from RAF Brize Norton, RAF Benson, Blackbushe Airport, and Farnborough Airport, requiring coordination with air traffic control, airfield operators, and the regulator.

Ecosystem and Platform Strategy

Vertical is pursuing a common VX4 platform strategy spanning commercial and defense applications, with battery-electric and hybrid-electric propulsion options and the potential for increased autonomy over time. Cervenka said the company's one-platform approach is designed to shorten development timelines, improve capital efficiency, and reduce operating complexity.

At Farnborough, Vertical announced a partnership with Near Earth Autonomy, a provider of autonomous flight systems. Cervenka said Near Earth's technology is designed to integrate with Honeywell's Anthem avionics system, which Vertical uses in the VX4. The company sees potential applications in logistics, resupply, medical transport, and defense operations, while noting that necessary approvals would still be required.

Vertical also joined Project VERTI-GO, a Honeywell Aerospace-led initiative described as Europe's equivalent of the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program. The project aims to support the safe integration of eVTOL aircraft into European airspace. The company said it continues to engage with six regulators across key international markets.

The U.K. Ministry of Defence confirmed interest in Vertical's hybrid-electric and autonomous capabilities, according to the company. Vertical also launched the UK Government-backed ECLiPSE programme to develop next-generation charging and thermal management technologies.

Manufacturing and Financing

Vertical said it has entered advanced discussions with the UK Government regarding up to £10 million ($13.5 million) in support for the first of its planned production facilities. The company also signed a non-binding memorandum of understanding with UK Export Finance to establish a framework for potential export-linked and customer financing support.

Progress continues on the early aircraft assembly facility at Cotswold Airport and the expanded Vertical Energy Centre, both due to open later this year. The energy centre is expected to triple battery production capacity over time.

On the financial front, Vertical announced financing commitments of approximately $100 million from existing and new investors. The company had approximately $134 million (£99 million) in cash and cash equivalents as of August 13, 2026.

Here is a snapshot of the company's financial position and outlook:

MetricAmount
Cash and cash equivalents (Aug 13, 2026)~$134 million (£99 million)
Financing commitments announced~$100 million
Expected net cash outflows (next 12 months)~$150 million (£110 million)
UK Government production facility support (under discussion)Up to £10 million ($13.5 million)

Note: Figures are as reported by the company in its H1 2026 business update.

Short-term liquidity, together with remaining proceeds from the financing commitments expected on or about August 13, 2026, and anticipated future draws under available facilities, is expected to provide at least 12 months of runway.

Looking ahead, Vertical expects to complete its Critical Design Review by the end of 2026, which establishes the certifiable design baseline for the aircraft and enables the build and test of certification-conforming aircraft. The company plans to open its early aircraft production facility in Q3 2026 and the expanded energy centre in Q4 2026. The retrofit of the latest prototype aircraft for hybrid-electric flight testing is targeted for the first half of 2027.

Vertical has approximately 1,500 pre-orders for Valo from customers across four continents, including American Airlines, Avolon, Bristow, GOL, and Japan Airlines. The company said certain customer obligations are expected to be fulfilled via third-party agreements.
