Brazilian developer Moya Aero has completed a full transition flight with its full-scale MOYA 256 autonomous electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) cargo aircraft, demonstrating vertical take-off, wing-borne flight and a return to vertical landing.

The flight, announced on 21 October, marks a milestone in the aircraft’s development as it progresses towards potential operational use. Supported by Brazilian innovation agency FINEP, Moya’s flight-test programme has included nearly 200 flights with the MOYA 256 and close to 500 across its subscale and special-purpose aircraft, according to the company.

During the test, the MOYA 256 took off vertically, accelerated into forward flight and transitioned back to vertical flight for landing. Moya said the flight provided validation data for the aircraft’s propulsion, aerodynamic and flight-control systems across the different flight phases.

The aircraft uses the same propulsion system for vertical and forward flight. Its design is intended to combine the ability to operate from compact areas without conventional runways with the efficiency of wing-borne cruise flight. Moya says this could allow operations from sites such as football fields, although practical deployment will depend on operating requirements and regulatory approval.

The fully electric, uncrewed MOYA 256 is being developed for cargo transport and other missions, including medical and humanitarian deliveries, industrial logistics, e‑commerce and agribusiness. Published specifications list a planned payload of 30kg and a range of 160km.

It is part of Moya Aero’s planned cargo-drone family alongside the larger MOYA 760, which is designed for heavier loads. The company says it has begun production of a production-conforming MOYA 760 prototype. The two aircraft are intended to share elements of their architecture and systems.

Moya also reports receiving 119 letters of intent for its aircraft, although not necessarily firm orders or confirmed deliveries.

The successful transition flight moves the MOYA 256 beyond demonstrations of vertical flight alone and provides a basis for further testing of its flight envelope and control systems. The company has not announced a date for certification or entry into service. Further testing and regulatory approvals will be required before the aircraft can begin routine commercial operations.
